It’s that time of year-  when we bring guests into our home and treat them to an evening of entertainment and merriment. In preparation for this, we need to make sure our homes are ready to accommodate this new influx of people. To do this, steps may need to be taken to create a more open and inviting space. In an area that is already small, this could prove difficult but fortunately, there are some ways around it.

In most cases, the kitchen will be one of the most important locations when entertaining guests. Between food and beverage prep and serving, this will be the center of activity. Unfortunately, it is usually one of the tighter spaces in your home to begin with.

Getting creative with storage solutions can go a long way to make more room and so this might be a good time to let it all hang out! Make use of your entire cabinet by installing hooks to hang mugs from.

If you have space over a sink or a free wall without cabinets, consider installing a pot rack to store pans and larger utensils, freeing up cabinet and drawer space. This will also put them somewhere convenient for access instead of stacking them on top of each other. Hanging baskets for produce is a great way to clear up your counters as well as add a stylish touch to your kitchen.

Foldaway tables can offer surface space in a pinch and when not needed anymore, can be put in the down position and out of the way. Carts are another great option to provide temporary surface space and storage that can then be handy when entertaining and stowed away until the next time. Their mobility also allows them to be utilized anywhere in the home, and so can be used to bring food from the kitchen to the dining area. Cabinet and drawer organizers are simple solutions for maximizing space in cabinets and drawers that might be overlooked. Dividers can make storing larger dishes and trays easier and more accessible, but also create an attractive orderly appearance.

When it comes to the rest of your home, consider flow. The space should feel open and allow for movement. Open floor plans make this easy but if not an option, find ways to rearrange furniture to make a room more spacious and seem bigger. This article from The Spruce lays out a few ways to make the best of this situation.

Its a timeless tradition to have a bed that all the coats go on but maybe that could be the one tradition you let go of. Install enough hooks in your mudroom and entryways so that guests can have easy access to their jackets when its time to go. Berenson has a variety of hooks to hang your guestscoats, including the double hooks of our Prelude collection that will help you utilize vertical space.

We hope these tips help you get your space ready for guests to have a wonderful experience!
